    Public Interest Alberta (PIA) is a province-wide organization focused on education and advocacy on public interest issues. PIA exists to foster in Albertans an understanding of the importance of public services, institutions and spaces in Albertans' lives, and to build a network of organizations and individuals committed to advancing the public interest. Health Facilities Review Committee (HFRC) Act and Office

  The HFRC is a government-appointed body consisting of 12 members, two of whom are Members of the Alberta Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Other members of the Committee are citizens with varied backgrounds, areas of expertise and work experience. The HFRC visits all facilities under the Hospitals Act, the Nursing Homes Act or the Regional Health Authorities Act, and observes the manner in which they are operated. Receiving and investigating reports is also a major aspect of the Committee’s responsibilities.

  Protection for Persons in Care is a provincial government agency which investigates reports of abuse or safety concerns for adults in publicly funded care facilities including hospitals, seniors’ lodges and nursing homes. The Protection for Persons in Care Act, enacted in 1998, makes it a requirement to report any suspicion of abuse to a toll-free reporting line or local police authorities
